AP News' mobile app serves news tailored to individuals

The Associated Press is making its content more accessible and personalized for mobile readers with a new application that tailors news based on preferences in an easy-to-read format.

The news app recently debuted on the app marketplaces for readers to get a streamlined view of national and local news stories that matter to them, without sacrificing quality. The Associated Press? AP News app serves a wide range of individual behavior with Apple Watch support and tailored news feeds.

?The AP News user experience is designed to be simple, visual and intuitive and tailored to your personal interests,? said Michael Boord, global director of mobile at The Associated Press. ?We want to get you to the news that you want as quickly as possible through your main feed, but allow you to easily engage with topics in topic hubs at a deeper level and to have the ability to follow those topics.

?Each person?s feed is different based on their interests and location to make it more personalized and contextually relevant,? he said. ?It is also designed to highlight the great journalism of the customers of AP, with several hundred publishers already contributing their work to create a true global-to-local experience.

?And with custom alerts, not only will a user get breaking news alerts from The Associated Press, but they can customize the types of alerts that they receive and elect to get updates as the story further develops.?

News on the go
The publication is supporting individual consumption of news on mobile devices with a range of features that allow users to find the experience and news they want. Users are able to input their location through GPS, which then incorporates local news and features current weather conditions at the top of the homepage.

Users can enable push notifications to receive up-to-date push notifications from the app. Readers edit their homepages on the app to showcase only stories, subjects and places they are interested in.

In the top right hand corner of the homepage, users can click edit and deselect unwanted categories to tailor notifications to only receive news of interest. Users can also save stories to read later by clicking the bookmark symbol on individual articles.

The Associated Press values those who like to watch news stories on mobile, as well as those who would rather read the article by supporting both formats. Users can click the video tab within an article to view the footage for the story, as well as scroll through the gallery to see related images.

The app also shares news updates through notifications on the Apple Watch.
