Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating reports of alleged fraudulent business practices from several shopping extensions, including Paypal’s Honey, Microsoft Shopping, and Capital One Shopping. Consumers say that the shopping extensions steal sales commissions from referral links provided by content creators.
Online shopping sales commissions work by generating a unique cookie known as a last click attribution when clicking a referral link, that associates any purchase with the content creator and allows them to claim their commission. However, content creators are claiming that shopping extensions which claim to seek out the best deals often simply delete the original referring cookie and claim credit for the sale. This allows them to take commission away from the original referral by hijacking the last click attribution. They often do this even if no coupon codes or a worse code was applied to the sale. Content creators have alleged that the practices of these extensions have significantly damaged their financial livelihoods and continue to do so.
