Givsly, the purpose-led advertising and marketing company, today announced it is partnering with Reddit to power Karma Kash, Reddit’s new initiative to help minimize the impact of marketing waste, which will launch June 1st.
Reddit’s Karma Kash program will utilize Givsly's Good Marketing platform to provide its clients with the choice to opt out of receiving branded swag at events, meetings, and other touchpoints and instead redirect that budget as a donation to a nonprofit of their choice that also aligns with its company’s values.
“Reddit swag has become somewhat iconic and a key part of our presence at various events and initiatives, largely due to the surprise and delight factor it brings to our audience. We wanted to find a way to still invoke that ‘surprise and delight’ factor while minimizing our environmental impact and harnessing the power of collective good that we see on our platform every day. Karma Kash is all about rewarding our clients and customers by aligning with and supporting causes they’re passionate about,” said Timo Pelz, Reddit’s VP of Business Marketing. “On Reddit, your ‘karma’ is a reflection of how much your contributions mean to the community, and now Karma Kash offers an opportunity for us to partner even closer with our clients to drive real-world impact with an effective turnkey solution.”
A Reddit community like r/ZeroWaste has 1 million members with dozens of discussion threads around the desire for companies to eliminate swag or transition to more sustainable options. The swag industry is worth $64 billion, but only 21% of gifted swag is kept, resulting in a small return on investment for companies and around $50.5 billion in waste. Given the low business impact and high environmental impact, it’s imperative for brands to take a proactive approach to reduce it for individuals who may not be interested.
As more companies make efforts to reduce waste across their organizations, Givsly is seeing a significant increase in activities and use cases for everyday marketing tactics like swag, event activations, and client gifting. Activity for Q1 2023 was up 134% YOY as companies chose to take more sustainable approaches to their marketing efforts. Beyond the elimination of unwanted swag, which often ends up in landfills, companies are also seeing that Givsly is also helping them save tens of thousands on indirect costs like shipping and storage.
Chad Hickey, Founder and CEO of Givsly said: “Reddit is leading the charge on how all marketers should be thinking about waste. Sustainability isn’t just reducing your digital carbon footprint. It’s time for the industry to take responsibility and evaluate their event and swag waste with the same scrutiny as they are doing for the digital supply chain.”
