Dive Brief:
- Twitter is testing out two new advertising styles: the profile ad and the carousel ad.
- Ads on users' profiles appear a few tweets down with the words "Suggested by Twitter," and so far only show up when Twitter users are logged in.
- The new carousel ads allow users to swipe through several promoted tweets in the same placement.
Dive Insight:
Both ad units have potential benefits and downfalls. Carousel ads seem like a natural progression -- fellow social sites Pinterest and Instagram are now also employing them—and offer a way to fit a large number of ads into a small amount of real estate. The downside would be if users don't swipe, which is a likely hurdle. Adding advertisements to user profiles could also be beneficial for advertisers looking to target followers of certain users, such as a sports star, social media influencer, etc.
