Dive Brief:
- Looking to move in on the void MTV and VH1 left behind, Vice Media and Live Nation are reportedly teaming up to introduce a music platform that will span the web, TV, and mobile devices.
- While still unnamed, the venture is set to go live sometime next year and will feature live events and original programming.
- The property will be free and ad-supported.
Dive Insight:
Vice Media already has Noisey, an online music channel, and Live Nation had a series of 365 concerts live streamed on its channel on Yahoo Screen this year. Live Nation's offerings will be more focused on mainstream artists and live shows, and Noisey will have more of the original video programming.
Music has been out of the basic cable picture for a while now, with most people going online to watch music videos. "As big of a white space as there is for news, there's an even bigger white space for music," said Shane Smith, CEO of Vice Media. "MTV— Music Television—stopped making music television, so there's a massive white space."
