• While WhatsApp is technically included under Facebook's messaging umbrella since its acquisition, Marcus will not be involved and the app will continue to operate independently.

With all of Marcus' payment experience, the hire could be a sign that Facebook is looking to monetize Messenger. Currently, Messenger runs no ads and brings in no revenue for Facebook. The social giant will find likely find a way to bring in money through the app eventually, and Marcus could be the perfect person to lead those efforts.
