Brief:
- Google introduced a way to pay on mobile devices that brings together payment options in a single location, making transactions quicker for both mobile users and retailers, according to a blog post by the company. The feature lets consumers use any card or mobile pay option they have on file.
- Google partnered with more than 40 payment providers to make integrations simpler for merchants who want to offer the "Pay with Google" feature, including PayPal's Braintree, Stripe, Vantiv, Worldpay, Adyen and Groupe Paysafe. New partners include Ebanx, First Data, Global Payments, TapPay and others.
- The list of supported services initially included Doordash, Eat24, Instacart, Kayak, Postmates and Wish, among others. That list will expand to feature Airbnb, Papa John's, StubHub, Deliveroo and more in the future. For now, Google Pay works within mobile apps and Chrome, but may change in the future, TechCrunch reported.
Insight:
Google's payment service is intended to help retailers and app developers simplify transaction processing in a way that speeds up checkout times and avoids abandoned shopping carts. Pali Bhat, vice president of product management of payments, said in the blog post that Pay with Google aims to help shoppers reduce the frustration of making payments, including filling out several forms or having a session time-out in the middle of checking out.
As another sign of Google’s efforts to bring together its various services into one location, the new feature also works with Google Assistant, the voice-activated digital assistant that's available on Android phones and Google Home smart speakers.
On the retailer front, Pay with Google requires some set-up, which may delay rollout in some areas. Google is rolling out the platform globally, signaling that its mobile payment platform is available for the first time in countries like Brazil, where Google has partnered with iFood and Magazine Luiza previously.
