Dive Brief:
- A report from Internet Retailer predicts sales from mobile devices will account for 21% of all e-commerce by the end of 2014— for a total of $84 billion in sales.
- Of the mobile sales, 58% come from mobile websites, with the remaining coming from in-app purchases.
- E-commerce sites are responding to the trend with 20% of the leading 500 retailers now operating a responsive site that accounts for mobile shoppers coming to their website.
Dive Insight:
It's important to note that a large part of online shopping occurs on a mobile device, but it is finished elsewhere. For retailers to really drive mobile sales, they need to figure out a way to close the sales from visitors on the mobile device. More responsive sites will be helpful— and easier ways to pay on a mobile device will be critical.
