Dive Brief:
- Beginning last month, Firefox users were greeted with something new when opening a new browser tab, "suggested tiles."
- The suggested tiles feature content from selected partners, such as Fortune and Quartz, and so far Mozilla is not charging partners for the feature.
- The browser also has a paid "sponsored tile" version that debuted last November.
Dive Insight:
To go along with revenue generating "sponsored tiles," last month Mozilla rolled out "suggested tiles" for Firefox users opening a new browser tab. The suggested tiles show content from selected Mozilla partners that Darren Herman, Mozilla VP of content services, described in a blog post, "These partners are leaders in their categories, and we chose them for their ability to add value in Firefox. While we consider these to be commercial partnerships, we are not receiving money to show this content."
Suggested tiles partners include Yahoo, Fortune, Quartz, Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. So far Mozilla is not charging partners for the feature.
Partners for both suggested and sponsored tiles receive user data from Mozilla including clickthrough rates, how often tiles were permanently pinned and how often the tiles were blocked. Partners also have access to first-party data on Firefox users who do clickthrough on the tiles.
