Dive Brief:
- According to a report from eMarketer, Pinterest's user base is set to jump 11.4% year over year in 2015. The site is also set to capture 18.1% of Internet users on a monthly basis this year.
- The report shows that the digital scrapbooking site is on track to capture 59.3 million monthly users by 2019—that means 30% of all social network users.
- Debra Aho Williamson, principal social media analyst at eMarketer and author of the report pointed out: “[But] in a year when marketers are starting to worry about ‘dark social’ platforms where most conversations are private, there’s a polar opposite—Pinterest.”
Dive Insight:
Pinterest is on a serious roll, and as the report shows, is gaining momentum. The recent advertising efforts—carousel pins, targeting, privacy policy, etc— in combination with the growing user numbers will make Pinterest the premium sites for advertisers in coming years. The advantage of a crystal clear picture of what users want will only continue to elevate the platform this year. While there is still work to be done in digital advertising, if the user base keeps growing and the alleged soon-to-come 'Buy' button is a hit, the site could end up competing with the likes of Amazon in the coming years.
