While Coors Banquet doesn't explicitly reference "Smokey and the Bandit" in its press materials, the 1977 hit film starring the late Burt Reynolds serves as an obvious inspiration. In the road comedy, which was followed by several sequels, Reynolds' character Bo "Bandit" Darville drives a black Pontiac Firebird Trans Am to smuggle cases of Coors across state lines while antics ensue .
"Smokey and the Bandit" helped enshrine the Firebird as a desirable muscle car, and its value among collectors endures to this day, as detailed in an article in the Detroit Free Press. Reynolds' own Firebird sold for $172,000 at auction last year.
