Dive Brief:
- To make it more clear which posts are sponsored, native ad pioneer BuzzFeed is launching a new labeling system.
- All sponsored posts will now have a bold yellow box with the phrase "Promoted by," a change from the former pale yellow box with a "Presented by" tag that was often hard to see, especially on mobile.
- Pages will get a name change from "Featured Partner" to "Brand Publisher," more clearly denoting paid content.
Dive Insight:
BuzzFeed has been at the center of both scrutiny and envy over its successful native ads model. Clearer sponsored post labeling should ease some of the criticism that BuzzFeed was tricking readers. Of course, the publication has a bit of wiggle room because its content was never hard-hitting news or grounded in that much fact to begin with.
