Dive Brief:
- IBM has teamed up with Bon Appetite magazine to help show the real world applications of its supercomputer Watson -- which beat two human contestants in Jeopardy in 2011.
- Together IBM and Bon Appetite has released a beta version of a web-based app that uses Watson to generate recipes. Users enter ingredients and are given 100 Watson-generated options.
- The partnership to develop the app -- named "Chef Watson with Bon Appetite" -- started after the magazine's online editor reached out to IBM after seeing the partnership between Watson and Institute of Culinary Education during the SXSW festival.
Dive Insight:
IBM has working since January to find real world applications to prove Watson's capabilities. It can be difficult to explain an abstract concept like cognitive systems and a recipe generator is something to which a wide variety of people can relate. Unlike AllRecipes.com or other recipe generators, the data isn't pulled from human-entered recipes, but rather are developed directly from Watson's abilities. The possibilities of Watson become more clear each time IBM finds another real world application.
