Dive Brief:
- Thursday, social photo sharing site Instagram made an announcement that ads will start appearing as soon as next week.
- The platform's ad announcement came earlier this month, and to ease users into the idea, Instagram on Thursday released a sample ad. That ad will be the first one users will see.
- Users will be able to hide ads and give feedback to help Instagram target the best audience for particular ads. Early advertisers will include Adidas, Ben & Jerry's, Burberry, General Electric, Levi's, Lexus, Macy's, Michael Kors, PayPal and Starwood.
Dive Insight:
Making the roll-out of ads transparent will hopefully keep user backlash at a minimum and avoid scaring away advertisers, who are wary of the negativity attached to new ads. Instagram users fall into an ideal demographic for a lot of brands, so don't be surprised to see more brands invest as the ads start to prove their value.
