Cricket offers unlimited mobile video downloads

Wireless services provider Cricket Communications Inc. is offering a flat-rate unlimited mobile video service to court its customer base.

Available immediately, the $5-per-month service lets consumers view as many one-to-four-minute-long video clips as they want from select handsets. Videos available include music videos, artist interviews, music documentaries, sports clips from Fuel TV such as soccer and mixed martial arts, entertainment news from Hollywood Insider, movie trailers, horoscopes, comedy, cartoons and selected Spanish language content.

"We continue to roll out products and services that are targeted to our specific demographics, and we've had a lot of success with that," said Larry Atwell, Denver, CO-based director of product development for Cricket. "We've learned from other carriers that have launched similar products, and I think this will be a homerun."

Cricket's customers are largely Hispanics, African-Americans and young males.

Cricket's Mobile Video service provides unlimited videos for $5 per month with no additional data charges, and can be added to any of Cricket's monthly rate plans.

Mobile video content will be refreshed on a weekly basis.

Toronto-based Quick Play is a partner in the initiative.

Content providers include 5280 Mobile, Go TV and Fox Interactive's Fuel TV.

Cricket Communications is a subsidiary of Leap Wireless International Inc.

"We've launched entertainment on the go on an unlimited basis to keep in line with the unlimited value proposition for our customer base," Mr. Atwell said.

"Video content is very appealing to Hispanics, African-Americans demo and the younger male audience that views music videos, sports and entertainment content while sitting in a car or on a bus or in between classes to entertain themselves," he said.

Cricket often communicates with its customers new products via SMS. The company will send a text message announcing the new product offering to all consumes with an eligible supported device.

Cricket will also use direct and indirect distribution, including posters, danglers and lenticulars on storefront windows, to spread the word.

"Because of our pay-in-advance model, we have interaction with our customer base each and every month when they come into our stores or alternative payment locations," Mr. Atwell said. "We use that as a communication point and an opportunity to market new services such as this one."

Cricket's Mobile Video service features personalized offerings to help customers find popular selections and match their specific interests.

This includes those that have been determined the most popular by the total number of downloads, featured videos selected by Cricket and recommended videos based on previous and current selections.

The service will also allow Cricket customers with video-enabled devices to trial the service and experience mobile video firsthand.

Cricket's Mobile Video service is available immediately on select handsets via the WAP browser.

Cricket offers consumers and local businesses a flat-rate unlimited service over the all-digital CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO wireless network.

Designed for customers whose basic and advanced wireless needs have not been met by traditional communications companies, Cricket offers unlimited services with no long-term commitments or credit checks required.

These services include unlimited text, instant and picture messaging, mobile Web access, mobile games, ringtones and wallpapers.

"Our target demographic is a very mobile population, they want music on the go," Mr. Atwell said. "They're hanging out with friends, going to school and playing sports, so it makes sense to offer a product they can use while they're on the go."

There are currently more than 1,000 pieces of mobile video content available to Cricket consumers.

Cricket claims that it is on track to double the size of its company by 2010

"Unlike our competitors we don't charge for data transfer, and we don't charge for a data package, which is a huge differentiator for us," Mr. Atwell said. "We're a low-cost provider, hence we're able to expand as quickly as we have.

"This service is part of our significant expansion model, and we'll continue roll out new products," he said.
