Sling Media launches SlingPlayer Mobile iPhone app

EchoStar Corp.'s Sling Media Inc. has launched a Wi-Fi-only version of its SlingPlayer Mobile application for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Now iPhone and iPod touch users have access to their entire home television experience. When in a Wi-Fi enabled area connected to a Slingbox Solo, Pro or Pro-HD, the SlingPlayer Mobile software lets consumers watch and control their living room TV at any time from any location using their iPhone or iPod touch.

"The strategy behind the launch of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone is to allow Sling customers and iPhone users to view a full spectrum of high-quality digital video in the palm of their hands," said Jay Tannenbaum, vice president of marketing at Sling Media, Foster City, CA.

The target demographic includes early adopters, users on the go who want access to their TV, existing Sling customers and iPhone users.

Sling Media offers consumer services and products such as the Slingbox, which lets consumers to watch and control their living room TV shows at any time, from any location, using PCs, Macs, PDAs and smartphones, and the new SlingCatcher, a universal media player that delivers broadcast TV, Internet video and personal content to the TV.

Sling Media is also the company behind the video entertainment Web site Sling.com, offering consumers a variety of TV shows, movies and other entertainment free for viewing online or on the TV using SlingCatcher.

The SlingPlayer Mobile app lets consumers change channels, control their DVR and watch their favorite shows on their iPhone or iPod touch.

In addition to the iPhone. SlingPlayer is also available for Research In Motion's BlackBerry, Palm, Microsoft's Windows Mobile phones and Pocket PCs, as well as Nokia's Symbian operating system.

The SlingPlayer Mobile application gives users mobile access to local channels, local sports teams, video on demand and pay per view, as well as the ability to watch and control their home digital video recorder.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod touch is priced at $29.99. It is available for a one-time download at the App Store, which includes five copies of the application.

There is no advertising within the application.

"Marketing tools include our fanatical user base, word of mouth, user forums and blogs, our Web site and media reviews," Mr. Tannenbaum said.
