New York Giants raise money for children's hospital via SMS
Fans attending the NFL's New York Giants games are being encouraged to join the team in supporting PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital by donating via SMS.
The hospital is an inpatient rehabilitation hospital for children recovering from accidents, illnesses, premature birth and life-changing conditions. Through the mobile giving program, fans can text the keyword "Giants" to short code 90999 to send a $5.00 donation to help children and families at the hospital.
"This is a terrific opportunity to spread the message of our hospital and raise money," said Philip Salerno III, president and chief development officer of Children's Specialized Hospital Foundation, New Brunswick, NJ. "We're grateful for our partnership with PSE&G, and now the New York Giants."
This is the first time a mobile giving program has been used to promote a New Jersey charity.
Last Sunday's game versus the Cincinnati Bengals was the first New York Giants game dedicated solely to a charity.
The game also marked the organization's Alumni Day, a homecoming for former players.
New York Giants alumni Stephen Baker, Bill Ard, Sam Garnes, Keith Elias and Brian Saxton visited patients at the hospital's New Brunswick facility on September 16 in anticipation of the event.
Alumni signed autographs, toured the hospital and met children living at the hospital during their intensive rehabilitation therapy.
Patients from the hospital will participate in Sunday's matchup as well.
Kelly Mahon, a long-term care patient, joined PSE&G representatives for the coin toss at the start of the game.
Members of the hospital's Lightning Wheels athletic team and teen club Friday Night Fever accompanied alumni players out on the field during a special halftime ceremony.
Fans who visited the Children's Specialized Hospital tables on the concourse and in the Game Day Live pre-game party were given commemorative rally towels.
