Alltel taps new revenue stream with mobile slide show app
Wireless carrier Alltel is offering customers a mobile slide show application called MyShow as part of a plan to boost its revenue stream.
With the new MyShow mobile application, Alltel customers can browse, create and share all photos captures with their mobile phones. The application is completely integrated between Web and mobile, so customers can share snaps through both mobile and Web screens.
"As more camera phones are being made available to Alltel customers, we wanted to allow them the opportunity to share their images in a new and exciting way - as a slide show," said Carrie Donnell, tool/wallpaper wireless product manager at Alltel.
"Users can already create and send slide shows of images they take from their digital cameras, so we wanted to extend that experience to our devices," she said.
As pictures are saved on the mobile device, the application automatically assembles them into a slide show. Users can personalize their slides with text and background music.
After customers are satisfied with the finished slide show, they can upload them to MyShow's companion Web site at http://myshow.funmo.com.
The MyShow "widget" and broadcast slide shows are also available on popular social networking sites.
In addition to creating and sharing slide shows, MyShow also allows users to view, rate and comment on slide shows created by other subscribers.
The application is now available for $3.99 per month through the Alltel Shop.
This initiative follows on the heels of another application Alltel launched earlier this year.
PhotoCopter, also known as the Alltel Pic Transfer, is an application that automatically uploads photos taken on the phone directly to the customers' favorite social media sites on their PC.
Alltel also offers other picture applications such as Kodak Mobile Link, which enables wireless customers to see photos on their phone and upload to their personal online Kodak Gallery, and Fujifilm Mobile Postcards, which lets users share a personal photo greeting and message with anyone via the U.S. Postal Service.
"As more Alltel customers are using their camera function on our devices, they are downloading their images as wallpaper," Ms. Donnel said.
"Alltel's MyShow application gives customers another way to share their favorite memories with loved ones," she said. "MyShow also allows Alltel to continue to reinvent its wallpaper revenue stream by adjusting to market trends and user adaptability."
