Dive Insight:
Chatbots are gaining a lot of buzz in the marketing community, thanks in part to Facebook's recent announcement that it would introduce bots into Messenger. According to Digiday, the interest in bots is so high that Facebook wasn't prepared for the response. Submissions from publishers are still waiting to be green-lit by the social media giant, according to Digiday.
In a telling quote, an anonymous publisher developer told Digiday, “Facebook isn’t quite ready to accept all the submissions and approve them.” At the same time Venture Beat pointed out that Facebook stated its chatbot program is still in beta and not intended for advertising right now.
It’s worth taking stock of how early chatbot efforts, such as Taco Bell’s TacoBot that uses Slack for ordering its fast food, perform. It’s still an unknown on how people will react to chatbots on messaging apps like Facebook’s Messenger and Kik. For BotRevenue, Venture Beat reported trying to sign up and receiving a message the service isn’t live yet.
